• Lumber is produced principally in the northeastern United States
• Aspen does not split when nailed, it machines easily with a slightly fuzzy surface
• The heartwood is grayish white to light grayish brown, sapwood is lighter colored and merges graduall into the hearwood without being clearly marked
• Usually straight grained with a fine, uniform texture
• Lightweight, soft, generally low in strength
